How to use a 3D Pen

By daniele

I’m not trying to scare you, but the first four 3D pens I purchased all broke within a few months. Yes, they’re all of them. Do you know why? Because 3D Pens are incredibly vulnerable to overheating, using the incorrect type of plastic filament, and extruder clogging, they are not recommended. Fortunately, my 3D pen hasn’t broken in a long time. Over the years, I’ve picked up a couple of tips and methods that I’m pleased to share. A 3D pen works by melting a plastic filament and pressing it through an extruder tip, similar to how a glue gun works. The melted plastic is incredibly pliable as it leaves the information and maybe painted on any surface or moulded into any shape. The plastic begins to cool quickly after leaving a tip, and after a few seconds, it hardens and is shaped into whatever profile you have created. I go through the basics of setting up your pen in the video below. I go over the fundamentals of utilising a 3D pen in this video.

Choosing the correct 3D pen and filament making plastic art with a 3D pen is a relatively inexpensive hobby. For under $100, you can acquire a nice pen and a few different plastic filament colours. If you have a little more money to invest, we recommend the 3D Simo Mini, which is suitable for beginners and professionals and costs roughly $140.Please see the following page for information on purchasing plastic filament. To summarise, ABS filament is somewhat more expensive, but it is more durable and flexible, so I recommend PLA filament for beginners. I use a variety of plastics in my 3D projects, but PLA is the most incredible place to start.

Making decor for the stuff we have around the house is one of my favourite pastimes. For this, 3D painting works amazingly well. You can use a plain and basic bowl or vase from your local corner store as a β€œmould” for your print. As is customary with 3D art, a picture is worth a thousand words, so I’ve provided an example of the decor I designed for a simple bowl that I purchased from an interior design store. This plastic embellishment is remarkably long-lasting and won’t shatter when handled or washed.
